Columbian soccer gets revenge over Calvert
Columbian opened the soccer season and gained a bit of revenge with a 3-1 win over Calvert at National Field at Frost-Kalnow Stadium Saturday.
"We lost to them (2-1) in last year's season finale so it was nice to avenge that," said Columbian head coach Mike Ritter. "I'm very proud of the effort. The kids played with a lot of intensity from the opening whistle to the end."
The Tornadoes built a 2-0 lead in the first half. Eric Hall scored on a head ball from Shawn Ritter and Andrew Foster scored an unassisted goal.
Calvert opened the second half with a goal to cut the Columbian lead to 2-1, but Ben Braley answered with an assist from Josh Smith.
"Tony Consolo had five saves for us in goal," said Ritter. "Two sophomores, Braley and Andy O'Connor, also played very well in the opener."
It was also the opener for Calvert, which visits Eastwood for a 7 p.m. match Tuesday.
"Dan Boyd and Brian Guzowski had strong games at midfield, but could not break down the Columbian defense," said Calvert head coach Dave Boyd.
"Anthony Smith had several nice runs down the side. One of his crosses created a goal mouth scramble that Boyd scored on. Greg Krupp and Phillip Smith played well on defense, as did John Guzowski. Matt Kraut was in goal.
"The new field was nice to play on and will only get better in time. Generally, the players felt that it played like grass. The soccer community is really appreciative of being able to play on the new field."
Earlier, Columbian jayvees fell to Bucyrus, 3-1, with Hall scoring the lone goal in the second half.
Zach Fowler was in goal the first half and had 10 saves with Jarrod Hoffman coming on in the second half for seven saves.
Columbian will host Norwalk Tuesday at the new field with jayvees starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow at 7.
