Interesting matchups in second week of high school football

With one game apiece under their belts, area football teams enter Week 2 with some interesting challenges.

Some will face teams who are out for revenge over losses from 1999. Others look to improve on subpar performances from last week. One game features two rookie coaches butting heads, while another represents the only time the two opponents will square off.

Mohawk may be facing the hungriest foe. Although, Warrior coach Shane Jacoby has a less-than-impressive record against Wynford (1-4), his team's 1999 victory was one sided. To add to Wynford's eye for vengeance, the loss eventually played a key roll in keeping the Rams out of the postseason.

Fostoria coach Tom Grine takes his Redmen on the road to battle Madison Comprehensive. One would think the long drive and lack of home field advantage would have Grine concerned, but in this series home has not been so sweet, as the road team has won every contest.

Derek Kidwell and Eric Brickman represent the showdown of newcomers to high school head coaching. Hopewell-Loudon comes off a lackluster 6-0 victory in Kidwell's debut, and Lakota aired it out in week one, but three turnovers led to a loss to Liberty-Benton for Brickman.

Coldwater hosts the Upper Sandusky Rams, which was supposed to be a two-year series, but, newcomers to Coldwater's have made this matchup a one-night stand.

Seneca East and Carey enter games against Plymouth and Riverdale, beaming from lopsided 1999 victories. Frank Lamoreaux's Tigers squashed Plymouth 52-6, while the Blue Devils trounced Riverdale 18-0. This should mean two more teams will have revenge on their agendas.

St. Wendelin will seek a little revenge of its own against Stritch, which beat them in 1999. Plus, the Mohawks are out to redeem themselves from a subpar performance at the hands of Elmwood in Week 1.
