Doubles squads give TC lift

WILLARD -- Columbian beat up Willard, 4-1, to improve to 11-2 overall and 9-0 in the Northern Ohio League while dumping the Crimson Flashes to 4-7 and 3-5.

The Tornadoes swept the doubles matches. Stephanie Kissell and Lara Ellinger handled Bri Wilson and Rachel Carr, 6-2, 6-2, at first doubles. In the second doubles match, Amber Shellhammer and Rachel Lape beat Torie Leitz and Amie Rice, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

In singles play, Rutu Dalal swept past Jani Cavalier at third singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Michelle Maxwell of TC outlasted Kelly Aguilar in the first position, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Willard won the second doubles match as Katie Graham defeated Rachel Banks, 6-1, 6-7 (0-7), 6-3.

Columbian has its third league match in three days today when it hosts Norwalk.

 

Calvert clips Eagles

Calvert won every match in straight sets in a 5-0 win over Toledo Notre Dame Academy.

First singles player Mary Kin and third singles player Allisun Kelbley enjoyed 6-1, 6-2 wins for Calvert, which improved to 8-1 as a team. Allison Welly won the second singles match, 6-4, 6-3.

"Allisun, Katie Kerschner and Kasey Vogel have all done a great job this season switching spots," Calvert coach Dave Kimmet said. "We've played them all at number three singles and other places, and they've all performed when they've been called on."

Jenny Haley and Theresa Vela were 6-1, 6-4 winners at first doubles for the Senecas, and Jen Boes and Marcia Corthell won at the second spot, 6-0, 6-1.

The Senecas play in the Fostoria Tournament Saturday.

 

Fliers soar over FHS

FOSTORIA -- First-singles player Katie Droll was the only Fostoria winner as Clyde beat the Redmen, 4-1.

Droll beat Clyde's Kelly Williams, 7-5, 6-3. Clyde took the other two singles matches as Laura Seaman got by Katie Schlesselman, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, and Marissa Greenslade topped Courtney Smith, 6-0, 6-4.

In the first doubles spot, Clyde's Cassie Newsome and Amanda Showman beat Carrie Guernsey and Tina Chanyaphong 6-0, 6-0. Andrea Wilson and Danielle Shetzer defeated Fostoria's Jenni Blose and Alysia Dull, 6-2, 6-0.

Clyde improves to 9-1 while the Redmen fall to 2-12.
