Tornadoes sweep tri-meet at home
Carly Bowers ran to victory in 21:16 to lead the Columbian girls to a tri-meet victory over Upper Sandusky and Bucyrus at Hedges-Boyer Park.
The Tornadoes totaled 21 points, with the Rams getting 44 and the Redmen 71.
Brittany Zellner (22:30) and Kathy Scott (22:35) ran 3-4 to back Bowers. Also in the top ten were Jackie Comer (sixth, 22:42), Rachael Turner (seventh, 22:46), Abby Miller (ninth, 23:08) and Krista Bird (10th, 23:23). Rounding out the Tornado runners were Laura Goshe (13th, 25:09), Steph Glick (14th, 25:31), Emily Cramer (15th, 25:33), Kelly Babcock (18th, 25:55) and Ryan DeLaCruz (20th, 26:02).
"We ran strong as a group," Tornado coach Matt Miller said. "Our pack time was good compared to what we have been running. Our runners have been working for the varsity positions and these have been changing, which means we're competitive among ourselves and this will make us better."
Amy Oehlers finished second in 21:57 to lead the Upper Sandusky effort. Next was Sarah Humphrey (fifth, 22:39) and Kim Swinehart (eighth, 22:50). Also on the course were Gwen Gelbaugh (17th, 25:51), Sarah McWilliams (19th, 25:58), Cara Bennett (21st, 26:41) and Marta Ferreira (24th, 27:33).
In the boys race, Upper Sandusky's Aaron Lambert was No. 1 in 17:13, but Columbian had five of the next best seven runners as they took a tri-meet with 25 points.
The Rams were second with 44 points, while Bucyrus tallied 65.
Derrick Brown was second in 17:16 and Jason Gurney third in 17:33 to lead Columbian. Andrew Greene (18:10) was fifth, Sam Moyer (18:21) seventh, Jeremiah Glick (18:27) eighth and Greg Trumble (18:40) tenth. Rounding out the runners were Aaron Way (11th, 18:46) and Sam Glick (16th, 19:13).
"Our top five were only about a minute apart," Columbian coach Craig Snyder said. "That's not too bad, but I think they were a little tired from a tough meet at Malone over the weekend. From this point on, we really have to work on getting our times down."
Kent Collins backed Lambert for Upper Sandusky by taking fourth in 17:39.
Old Fort boys second, Mohawk girls third at Riverdale
MT. BLANCHARD -- Cliff Riehm and Jordan Miller were the top two overall finishers to lead the Old Fort boys to a second-place finish at the Riverdale Invitational.
Columbus Grove won the event with 44 points, while the Stockaders totaled 71 points.
Riehm crossed the line in 18:03, 18 seconds ahead of Miller. Brian Ryman was also big, taking fifth in 18:37. Next were Steve Merrit (25th, 20:01), David Myers (38th, 20:44) and Brian Riehm (55th, 27:10).
"They're coming along," Old Fort coach Tony Miller said. "My top four are three freshmen and a sophomore. They're starting to bring their times around. Hopefully they'll keep bringing them down and we'll see some good times at league and at districts."
Bettsville's Evan Baker won the open race in 17:20. Justin Harrison was third (18:47), Steve Weller 12th (20:14) and Nick Miller 17th (20:45) for the Bobcats. Mohawk's Billy Brooks was 31st in the open race (25:53).
In the girls race, Liberty-Benton ran away from the field with 25 points, 35 ahead of Columbus Grove. Mohawk was third with 89 points, one ahead of Pandora-Gilboa. Carey (125) was fifth, Cory-Rawson (144) sixth, Bettsville (175) seventh and Old Fort (241) eighth.
Abby Ward topped the Warriors effort by taking ninth in 22:36. Next were Ashley Clifton (12th, 22:40) and Megan Ruffing (17th, 23:04). Also running were Julie Goshe (25th, 24:41), Emily Ruffing (26th, 24:18), Brandi Weininger (31st, 24:39) and Jodi Calmes (33rd, 24:51).
In the open race were Ashley Walton (20th, 26:13) and Katie Lust (31st, 29:04).
The Bettsville girls fielded a full team for the first time this season and were led by Jenna DeVanna (28th, 24:26). Also completing the course were Val Stump (34th, 24:52), Courtney Schiewe (36th, 25:10), Emily Sendelbach (40th, 26:16) and Francesca Gorbunow (41st, 26:21).
Running for Old Fort were Hillary Keegan (48th, 27:26), Cara Bass (50th, 29:53), Amanda Noss (51st, 29:55), Ashley Smith (54th, 31:30) and Sara Noss (55th, 32:42).
OREGON -- Ryan Headley's fourth-place finish in 18:51 led Fostoria to a second-place finish in a tri-meet at Clay.
The host Eagles won with 22 points, while the Redmen had 35. Fremont Ross had the top runner (Jeremy Framotao in 17:06) but was third with 85 points.
Josh McClellan was next for Fostoria, taking seventh in 19:29. Also running were Mike Cooley (12th. 20:21), Phillip Cooley (13th, 20:39), Rory Oren (17th, 21:41), Matt Ballreich (20th, 23:23) and Nate Overmier (21st, 24:04).
