Capital edges 'Berg women

Joey Hayes scored with just under six minutes left to give Capital a 2-1 win over Heidelberg women Tuesday at Mayer Field.

Each team scored once in the first half with Heidelberg taking a 1-0 lead on a Molly Thornton goal with an assist from Michelle D'Angelo just eight minutes before intermission. Capital came back six minutes later with the equalizer by Leslie Starbuck.

The Crusaders, improving to 12-4-1 overall, had a 13-9 edge in shots on goal and Julia Rose had 11 saves for Heidelberg, which dropped to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital is 6-0-1 in the conference.

Thornton leads the 'Berg with eight goals this season.

"We played tremendously well today. It was an excellent performance for us against a very good team," said Heidelberg women's coach John Hall. "It is always a shame when a game is decided by an officials' decision instead of how the ladies are playing on the field and that does put a damper on the game. But I am very happy with our performance in the contest today, we showed a lot of character and poise."

Both teams have already clinched bids to the OAC Tournament next week and they will be joined by Ohio Northern (13-4, 7-1) and John Carroll (11-3-1, 4-1-1).
