Cardinals soar over 'Berg
WESTERVILLE -- Otterbein was able to show why it has spent the season ranked among the top teams in the nation, handing Heidelberg its second loss of the season, 4-1.
Heidelberg has one regular season game left, at Muskingum on Saturday. In all probability, The 'Berg will travel to John Carroll for the Ohio Athletic Conference semifinals next week. The winner of the tournament gets an automatic bid to the nationals.
Otterbein scored 16 minutes in to the game, and made it 2-0 just 38 seconds before halftime on a touch-in off a long throw.
Five minutes in to the second half, Heidelberg closed to within 2-1 on Adam Neill's goal, which was assisted by Brandon Wulf. The home team made it 3-1 with 17 minutes to go on a corner kick and produced the game's final goal on a penalty kick with 18 seconds to go.
Ryan Mack and Bucky Harrison split time in goal for Heidelberg.
"They're a very physical soccer team," Heidelberg coach Brian Haley said. "We played very strong in the second half and controlled much of it, but we really need to work on defending against set patterns like on the corner kicks and the throw-ins if we're going to get to play another game with them.
"We learned a lot today. The score doesn't really give an accurate picture of the game, but Otterbein deserves full credit and they deserved to beat us. We need to learn from our mistakes in case we get the chance to play them again."
CEDARVILLE -- Tiffin University women clinched the American Mideast Conference championship for the second straight year following a 6-0 blanking of Cedarville College Tuesday.
The Dragons, improving to 15-3 overall and 8-0 in the AMC, struck for a pair of goals in the first half with Elizabeth Wead scoring two of her four goals. She found the net at the 11:33 mark with an assist by Carola Anderson and followed with an unassisted goal 29 minutes later to give TU a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Anderson got the first goal for the Dragons in the second half with both Ashley Fritz and Wead assisting. Wead followed with a pair of goals within an 11-minute span. The first came on a penalty kick and the second goal was unassisted. Then, Jamie Long scored with 74 minutes gone in the match and Sarah Fieler assisted.
"The team played really well, especially in the second half," said TU women's coach James Walker. "The second half is the best we've played all season. We didn't allow them (Cedarville) many shots in the second half."
Shawna Amato started in goal for the Dragons and had three saves in 71 minutes and Jen Horstman finished up with one save over the final 19 minutes.
