Jackets sting 'Berg

DEFIANCE -- Defiance held a 43-37 halftime lead over Heidelberg and hit 9-of-10 shots to start the second half en route to a 91-70 win over The 'Berg.

Heidelberg (1-2) was held to 27-of-68 shooting for 39 percent while the Yellow Jackets (1-1) shot 37-of-67 for 55 percent. Defiance outrebounded Heidelberg 47-34 and shot 12-of-21 from behind the 3-point arc.

Kory Winkler scored 16 points to lead Heidelberg. The senior has scored 46 points in Heidelberg's first three games. He shot 6-of-9 from the field, including hitting one of two 3-point attempts, and 3-of-4 from the foul line. Winkler and Ryan Szepiela led the team with five rebounds each, and Nate Walters grabbed four boards.

Josh Patterson was 5-of-7 at the foul line on his way to 11 points, and Walters (two 3's) scored 10 points. Ryan Klebowski scored nine. Szepiela had seven points and five assists and Otterbacher had four assists.

Defiance put five players in double figures, including Arlington grad Seth Newlove (five 3's, 24 points), Gavin Sever (15 points), Chad Kahle (12 points, 10 rebounds), Kris Hinchcliff (11 points) and Eric Viney (10 points). Hinchcliff had six assists and Kahle had four.

The 'Berg is action again in the Cleveland Classic Opponent Exchange this weekend. Heidelberg is at Case Western Reserve Saturday before a Sunday trip to John Carroll to play Oberlin.
