Carey girls open with win over Vanlue
CAREY -- Carey scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to blow the game open and seal a season-opening 61-47 win over Vanlue.
The Blue Devils, who travel to Bettsville Thursday to open the Midland Athletic League slate, held leads of 16-15, 27-24 and 39-35 at the quarter breaks. Carey held a 33-26 advantage in rebounding and shot 50 percent from the field, including four-of-eight from behind the arc.
Pien Chairit hit all four Carey treys on her way to 16 points and seven assists, and Kristin Buhl led the winners in points with 19, rebounds with 11 and steals with three. Maria Brodman pitched in nine points, while Krista Doran, Jaclyn Boes and Alicia Derr scored four apiece.
Angie Lee popped in 21 points and Shannon Thomas added 14 for Vanlue, which was limited to 14-of-43 shooting by Carey but hit 16-of-29 at the free throw line.
