Outside shot lifts Carey to win
CAREY -- Carey hit seven 3-pointers, four of those coming from bench player Laura Hunt, in a 58-48 season opening win over Vanlue.
Carey (1-0) held leads at the quarter breaks of 17-12, 32-22 and 44-33. Hunt was 4-of-5 from 3-point range, Molly Zender added two 3's and Holly Brodman hit one from outside. Carey takes a trip to Calvert to open the Midland Athletic League season Tuesday.
Vanlue (0-1) shot 21-of-63 from the floor compared to 18-of-60 for the home team, but the Blue Devils shot 15-of-24 from the foul line and the Wildcats were just 3-of-10.
Brooke Orians scored 13 points to lead the Carey attack. Hunt was next with 12, and Zender scored 11. Brodman chipped in nine points while Amber Ray and Connie Cole were scoring four apiece. Brodman had eight rebounds and Cole came down with seven.
Warriors hold off Bettsville
TOLEDO -- Laura Sisco hit both of her 3-point attempts on her way to a team-high seven points for Bettsville, but the Bobcats slipped to 0-2 with a 58-31 loss to Toledo Emmanuel Baptist.
The Bobcats hung with the Warriors in the rebounding category, grabbing 24 to 27 for the home team, but Emmanuel Baptist forced 30 turnovers and Bettsville shot just 5-of-45 from 2-point range. The Bobcats hit 3-of-5 treys they attempted.
Jyl Trautman (nine rebounds) and Valerie Stump followed Sisco with six points each for Bettsville, and Jessica Vallejo and Ashleigh Valentine (3-pointer) scored four points each. Angie Bingle grabbed four rebounds and Stump and Alison Lang each had three. Sisco had three assists and two steals, and Nicole Lopez also had three assists.
Bettsville is at Mohawk Thursday.
