Shawnee State rolls over TU

PORTSMOUTH -- Shawnee State showed why it is ranked the top-ranked team in the nation, rolling to an 81-60 win over Tiffin University in the finals of the American Mideast Conference tournament.

Despite the loss, the Dragons (14-15) are guaranteed a spot in the national tournament, the first such appearence in school history. Their opponent and game site will be determined.

"They jumped out to a good lead in the first half; I think it got up to about 20-22 points," TU coach Leslie Mugg said. "We came out real flat. We had open looks we normally knock down and I think we were surprised to get them. We still looked a little intimidated."

The winners held a 44-28 lead and finished with a large advantage at the foul line, going 24 of 32 compared to Tiffin's 13 of 19. Shawnee St. got 21 points from Brandy Humphrey and 19 points and 10 rebounds from Mandy Goin. Becky Holden added 15 points.

Jacki Swaisgood put in 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Dragons. Katie McBroom pitched in 10 points and Laura Goins nine.

"It's frustrating," Mugg said. "I thought tonight would be the night. I'm disappointed, and the kids are too, but we're taking a lot into the tournament, and into next year. I feel we have a nice shot at winning our first (tournament) game."
