Tornadoes squeak past Mohawk on eighth-inning single

Sara Theis singled home Jessica Sharp in the bottom of the eighth to help Columbian squeak past Mohawk 2-1 Tuesday in the season-opener for both teams.

Sharp led off bottom of the eighth with a walk and stole second before Theis lined the game-winning hit.

Columbian struggle for most of the game against Mohawk's offense, but took advantage of one miscue by the Warriors to go up 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth.

Sharp reached first on an error and stole second before Erin Rupp singled her home.

Mohawk answered in the seventh when Jodi Stevens doubled and the Warriors loaded the bases. Stefanie Pauley then knocked Stevens in to knot the score at 1-1.

Columbian coach Mike Hampp said the Tornadoes had their chances to score more runs, but Mohawk's defense was just too tough. The Warriors had two errors but also turned a double play to make Columbian leave 11 batters on base.

"We had bases loaded twice and couldn't score. We also had runners at second and third and could score," Hampp said. "Mohawk did a good job defensively. We just couldn't string our hits together at the right time."

But Columbian's offense wasn't the only one that was stymied.

Rupp fanned 10 Warriors and shut down the first 12 batters she faced for Columbian.
