Everhart shuts down Mohawk

SYCAMORE &emdash; Mike Everhart came up big in his first start for the Columbian baseball program, throwing a one-hitter at Mohawk as Columbian beat the Warriors, 10-0.

"I was worried coming into this game, knowing what they had and because we lost to them last year at our place," Columbian coach Adam Schmucker said. "Mike Everhart did a great job in his first varsity start of keeping the leadoff batter off base. We did a pretty good job of getting runners on, and eventually started to get them home. Even with the terrible weather, we didn't have any errors. There are still a lot of things we need to improve on, but a win is a win, and this was a nice one."

The Tornadoes (1-0) sealed the deal with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning. Everhart struck out nine and walked two, while Mark Gaietto took the loss for Mohawk, striking out four and walking five while giving up four hits in 4 2/3 innings. Zack Ekleberry came on in relief.

"We just went from one extreme to the other offensively," said Mohawk coach Phil Kimmet, whose team pounded Buckeye Central 20-1 to open the season.

"It didn't seem like we were prepared to play tonight. Tiffin had a lot to do with it because they played great, but we had a lot of mental and physical errors. It's early, and we've got plenty of time to iron those things out."

Scott Bloomfield had a two-run double in the third to get things going for TC. He finished with three hits, four RBI and a run, and Nick Shoemaker added two hits and two runs. Brad Snyder singled, in addition to scoring two runs and driving in one. Mike Porter had a two-run single, Dan Lutz had a hit, an RBI and a run and Ryan Clouse had a run to go with his hit. Anthony Theis scored two runs and Dan Breyman had one.

Grant Good had the only hit for Mohawk, a single in the sixth.

NR dumps Upper with big inning

UPPER SANDUSKY &emdash; New Riegel exploded for nine runs in the top of third inning to overcome a three-run deficit on the way to a 12-5 win Tuesday over Upper Sandusky.

Upper Sandusky had control early over a shaky New Riegel squad, with Chad Karg tripling in Nick Lee and Kevin Ward, who both walked to start of the bottom of the first inning.

Karg was thrown out trying to score on a passed ball.

Brett Anderson walked and scored after Dennis Karcher and Ross Blake both reached base on errors to put the Rams up 3-1.

The Rams added another run in the second when Karg's groundout to short stop scored Tyson Geiser.

Then New Riegel took control.

The Blue Jackets sent 16 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring nine runs off seven hits.

Darin Nye and Brett Hammer led the charge, scoring a pair of runs that inning.

Winning pitcher Jason Humphrey settled down after that, allowing just one run off three hits the rest of the way.

Dereck Uitto paced New Riegel's attack with three singles and three RBIs, Paul Borer added a three RBIs, a single and a double and Jon Kauffman, Scott Williams and Ronnie Shellhammer all had RBI singles.

Bucks spoil opener for H-L

NEW WASHINGTON &emdash; Buckeye Central blanked Hopewell-Loudon 2-0 in a five inning baseball game Tuesday.

Hopewell-Loudon (0-1), which played without five of its six seniors because of the school's senior class trip, held the Bucks (1-1) scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Buckeye Central's first batter walked, stole second and third and then scored on a hit. The other run came on another hit moments later.

The game was called on account of darkness.

Freshman Josh Lang suffered the loss in relief of classmate Danny Ray. They teamed up to strikeout 10 batters, but three of the BC's hits came in the fifth inning.

Matt Lang, Craig Reinhart and Sean Borer all singled for Hopewell-Loudon, which plays at Woodmore Thursday.
