Lawson and freshmen guide TU to split with Mount Vernon

Kim Lawson blasted a three-run homer and freshmen Katie McBroom and Kristin Forbes both had big days in their first collegiate start to help Tiffin romp past Mount Vernon 9-1 and salvage a split in an American Mideast Conference doubleheader Monday.

Mount Vernon blanked the Dragons 4-0 in first game, a game TU coach Brian Campbell said his team just wasn't ready to play.

But the second game was much different.

"I was happy with their performance when they decided to play in the second game, but they just weren't there in the first game and you can't do that in our conference," he said.

"If you don't come to play, you can get beat by any of them," he said. "I'm very proud of the way they stepped up and did in the second game what they should have done in the first game."

Lawson launched a three-run homer and scored another run for the Dragons while McBroom tripled and singled to bring in two runs and Forbes singled twice and scored a run.

Erica McGee had an RBI and double, Missy Smith scored twice and singled, Christy Prast doubled and Mandy Balduf singled and chased in a run for the Dragons (19-11 overall, 11-3 AMC).

Renee Whaley went all five innings to up her record to 7-1, surrendering just one earned run and two hits.

The TU bats were much quieter in the opener, with Prast getting a double and single while Kate Siroky and Balduf both singled against Mount Vernon (15-9, 11-4).

Michelle Slark (9-5) took the loss for Tiffin, which hosts AMC-leading Ohio Dominican today. The Dragons are second in the conference.
