Columbian's Everhart puts lid on Shelby
SHELBY &emdash; Mike Everhart had a pair of base hits for Columbian, and also did the job on the mound by throwing a complete-game, six-hitter in a 2-1 Tornado win over Shelby.
Everhart (2-3) struck out four, walked four and did not surrender an earned run in helping TC improve to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the NOL. Nick DiVito was the losing pitcher for Shelby (6-7).
"For the most part tonight, we played good, sound baseball," Columbian coach Adam Schmucker said. "We've been in really close games, and it's nice to finally be able to get one tonight. We found a way to win, and that's enough. We did some of the little things that we weren't doing before."
Brad Snyder scored in the top of the first for Columbian on a ground out by Scott Bloomfield. After Shelby evened things in the second, TC scored what turned out to be the final run of the game in the top of the third.
Anthony Theis singled, went to second on an error, and came across after DiVito walked Ryan Clouse and Dan Lutz consecutively.
Snyder and Theis had a hit and a run each for the winners, and Lutz singled and had an RBI.
Upper Sandusky comes to Columbian on Thursday.
Bobcats rebound nicely
BETTSVILLE &emdash; A day after suffering a 22-run defeat the Bettsville baseball team rebounded to score 10 runs in the third inning to post a 14-7 win over Danbury.
The top three hitters in the Bobcats' order combined for seven hits, five RBIs and six runs.
Jeremy Schumm (double, RBI) and Jon Rollins (two RBIs) had two hits apiece, while Eddie Sisco (double) drove in two runs on three hits.
Rollins went the first 3 1/3 innings to pick up the victory. He struck out two, walked three and allowed seven hits.
Eddie Sisco came on in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and one out and got the Bobcats out of the jam. Sisco finished the game without allowing a run.
Danbury grabbed a quick lead with two runs in each of the first two innings before the Bettsville bats answered in the third.
"It was a big inning for us because we wee down 4-1 at the time," Bettsville coach Brian Coleman said. "Eddie did a great job for us, and the top of our order has really been hot lately.
"Our pitchers are doing a good job of throwing ground balls; we just have to start getting the job defensively. We had nine errors yesterday, and we had a couple today."
Josh Schumm and Jason Lee had two hits for the Bobcats, and Paul Yeakle and Don Lawrence contributed one apiece.
The 4-5-1 Bobcats, who travel to MAL-leading North Baltimore today, have equaled their win total from last year.
Blue Devils pick up first win
VANLUE &emdash; Carey jumped on top 5-0 in the top of the first and led 10-0 after batting in the third on the way to getting its first win of the year by downing winless Vanlue 12-2 Tuesday.
"We've been playing competitively all year long, so it's nice get one," said Carey coach Dennis Ruhe, whose team is 1-8 going in to a home game with St. Wendelin today. Vanlue is 0-8. "We jumped on them early and hit the ball pretty well the whole game."
Shane Thompson doubled on his way to a 5-for-5 night for the winners. He scored twice and drove in two runs.
Tim Atkins (run), Monte Miller (RBI) and David Bratton (run, RBI) had two hits apiece for the Blue Devils, and other hits came from Byron Hart (run), Eric Vaughn (two runs), Tyler Overbee (two runs, RBI) and Lawrence Deer (triple, run, three RBIs). Gabe Stansbery scored two runs.
Overbee was the winning pitcher, throwing a three-hitter, and Aaron Tong took the loss. Tong also led the Wildcats at the plate, singling and scoring twice.
The Blue Devils host St. Wendelin today.
Deck slams H-L past Arlington
ARLINGTON &emdash; Brandon Deck smashed a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning Tuesday to help Hopewell-Loudon beat Arlington 6-2 in non-league action.
The blast, one of two by the Chieftains, broke a 2-2 tie and helped Nathan Brickner (1-1) earn the pitching victory.
Todd Elchert had the other homer for the 2-7 Chieftains, launching a two-run shot in the second inning.
"We had two innings with two home runs and that was enough to get us through," said Hopewell-Loudon coach Craig Lang.
Deck also doubled, as did Andy Brickner. Jason Thompson and Craig Reinhart each singled for the Chieftains, who didn't commit an error in the game.
Hopewell-Loudon travels to New Riegel today for a non-league game.
Eagles double up on Old Fort
OLD FORT &emdash; Monroeville took the lead for good in a back-and-forth game with 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning, going on to defeat Old Fort 20-10.
Old Fort (4-5) put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead, only to have the Eagles (4-5) take the lead with four runs in the fifth. The Stockaders came back to take a 9-8 lead before Monroeville's big inning.
Aaron Burks took the loss for Old Fort, striking out six and walking six. Dan Heilman and Matt Hoke pitched one inning apiece in relief.
Hoke stood out at the plate for the Stockaders, going 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs. Two of Hoke's hits were doubles, and Nick Margraf (run, RBI) doubled and singled.
Ben Steyer (two runs, RBI), Burks (run) and Kevin Kerlin (run) had two hits each, and Cliff Cleveland (run, RBI), Nate Cleveland (RBI), Chad DeMonte (run, RBI) had one hit apiece for the home team. Nick Kerlin scored a run.
Old Fort is at home against Fremont St. Joseph today.
Blachuta keys win over Lakota
BLOOMDALE &emdash; Lakota twice scored three runs in an inning to take the lead, but Elmwood, keyed by a great performance by Kyle Blachuta, answered each time on the way to a 7-6 Suburban Lakes League victory.
The Raiders (5-7 overall, 1-4 SLL) plated three in the top of the third to go up 3-1, only to see Elmwood answer back with four in the bottom of the inning for a 5-3 lead.
Lakota added three more runs in the fourth, but Elmwood scored twice in the fifth and held on from there for the win.
Blachuta provided the spark, fanning nine while going 2-for-3 at the plate for two homers and five RBIs.
Duncan Harmon (0-2) suffered the loss for the Raiders.
Steve Adams led Lakota by driving in three runs off a double and single. John Sanders had a double and two RBIs and Jason Harman hit three singles to chase home a run.
The Raiders host Otsego in another SLL game today.
Errors are SW's downfall against Green Bears
OTTAWA HILLS &emdash; Ottawa Hills scored the first six runs of the game and went on to defeat St. Wendelin, 13-3.
"The third inning was our undoing," St. Wendelin coach Paul Feasel said. "We had three errors the first three kids up that inning, and they ended up scoring four runs, that inning, all unearned. We got some of it back the next inning, but the wheels came off after that."
Ryan Smith hit a solo home run as one of his two hits for St. Wendelin (4-7). Smith fell to 2-2 with the pitching loss, striking out three and walking one.
Sean Reiter doubled and singled and drove in two runs, and Mike Meyers contributed a hit and a run scored. Jeremy Feasel scored the other run.
Ottawa Hills improves to 5-5.
St. Wendelin is at Carey today.
