Tornadoes and Rupp rough up Whippets

SHELBY &emdash; Columbian loaded the bases on the way to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and went on to post a 5-0 Northern Ohio League win over Shelby Tuesday.

Erin Rupp was nearly untouchable on the mound for the Tornadoes, giving up just one hit and no walks while striking out 10 on the way to improving to 3-1 on the year.

Her victory moved the Tornadoes to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the NOL, while the Whippets fell to 6-7 overall and 4-1 in the league.

"The kids did a great job, loaded the bases and jumped on them right way," Columbian coach Mike Hamp said. "Erin was outstanding again tonight. They were missing the ball. She was just awesome tonight."

Katie Fazekas paced Columbian's offense with a single and two RBIs while Kristin Seitz, Nicki Kuhn , Kristin Say and Jessica Sharp all had an RBI and single. Kaila Dunn also singled.

The only Shelby hit came from Holly Hartman in the second inning. Kate Sampsel was saddled with the loss.

Columbian hosts Upper Sandusky Thursday.

Mohawks win fourth out of last five

OTTAWA HILLS &emdash; St. Wendelin followed up its runner-up finish in the Northwest Ohio Catholic Schools Association Tournament over the weekend with a 6-4 victory over Ottawa Hills Tuesday.

"It's our fourth win in our last five games," said St. Wendelin coach Theresa Webb, whose team improved to 7-6. "We're actually on a roll now and they've got some confidence and are playing well.

"Hopefully that will continue for the rest of the year," she said.

The Mohawks tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the third, then went on top for good, 4-3, with two more runs in the fourth.

Both teams traded runs in the sixth and St. Wendelin added another score in the seventh.

Stacie Radcliff lined a double and single to drive in a run for the Mohawks while Allicia Lawrence and Kristy Shumaker each chased home two runs and doubled.

Jessica Kramb had an RBI and two singles, and Lindsay Reiter added a pair of singles to help Melanie Sauders (3-5) pick up the victory.

The Mohawks are at Carey for a Midland Athletic League game today.

Three runs all Fostoria needs

FOSTORIA &emdash; Fostoria scored three runs in the second inning, and that was all the Redmen needed as they moved to 8-3 on the year with a 3-0 victory over visiting Fremont St. Joe.

Tracy Lee improved her record to 5-2 in tossing a complete-game shutout. Lee struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Amy Strausbaugh took the loss for the Crimson Streaks, allowing five walks and no earned runs. Her record is 0-4.

With the bases loaded in the second, Fleming singled home one run. A single from Lee then brought in two more runs to finish the scoring.

Lauren Mathews rapped a double for St. Joe, whose record dropped to 2-9. Marianne Fox and Erica Franks accounted for the only other hits.

Eagles clip Calvert

FINDLAY &emdash; Calvert rallied for two runs to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning, but Liberty-Benton answered with two runs of its own in the fifth to double up the Senecas 4-2 Tuesday.

Ashley Hepp led Calvert (6-5) with an RBI and three singles while Anita Casillas tripled.

Hillary Hepp and Natasha Carpenter each had a single and an RBI, Tracey Doepker singled twice and Sara Stover, Audra Lewis and Amanda Margraf each had a single.

Carpenter (1-2) suffered the loss.

Liberty-Benton (8-3) was paced by Jackie Perhay's two singles and RBI and Elizabeth Staley's RBI and single.

Meredith Barfield hit two singles and Nikki Brown and Danielle Fields both singled to help Cassi Bucher earn the win.

"We outhit them, and we didn't play bad defense," Calvert coach Bob Grothaus said. "We just had some base running gaffes that really cost us. There were just little things here and there that stopped us."

Calvert travels to Seneca East today.

Unearned runs overcome Lockmiller's effort

KANSAS &emdash; Lakota squandered another fine pitching performance by junior Ashley Lockmiller Tuesday, allowing Suburban Lakes League rival Elmwood to win 3-1 on the strength of three unearned runs, including two in the top of the ninth.

Lockmiller scattered five hits and three walks and fanned 10 batters, but slipped to 6-3 with the loss. She hasn't allowed an earned run all year long.

Elmwood moved to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the SLL with the victory.

Stephanie Wagner and Elizabeth Chamberlin each drove in a run and singled for Elmwood. Melissa Reynolds singled twice for the Royals and Andrea Overmeyer hit a single. Erin Hammer picked up the win.

Lakota (6-3, 2-3) tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Alyssia Moroschan singled, stole second and scored on one of Amber Ginnever's three singles.

Jamie Ray added two singles for the Raiders, who also got a single each from Lockmiller, Maria Lowery and Crystal Miller.

Red Devils power past Chieftains

ARLINGTON &emdash; Arlington broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the third, then scored another in the fourth on the way to a 6-4 win over Hopewell-Loudon Tuesday.

The Chieftains (4-6) closed the gap by scoring three in the top of the sixth, but Arlington added another in the bottom of the inning and held on from there.

Ashley Frankart suffered her first loss of the year for Hopewell-Loudon, falling to 3-1. She also had a single for one of the Chieftains' five hits.

Michelle DeVault doubled and singled and Holly Thom and Elizabeth Hoover each had a single.

"We're not hitting the ball real well. We've had five, five, five (hits) the last few games," Hopewell-Loudon coach Steve Adelsperger said. "And we're making some mental mistakes out in the field, letting runners take an extra base. You can't do that if you want to win."

Emily Yates led Arlington with an RBI and single to help Jenny Coletta get the complete-game win.

Kristen Bash, Amanda Robinson, Aubrey Snyder, Mendi Preston and Natalie Snyder all singled for the Red Devils.

Hopewell-Loudon travels to New Riegel for a Midland Athletic League game today.
