Tigers win in extras

ATTICA -- Tony Scherley capped a two-out rally in the ninth inning with a game-winning single to lift Seneca East to its first Midland Athletic League victory of the season, 6-5 over Hopewell-Loudon.

The rally started with nobody on base when Kyle McConnell drew a walk. Jerod McDaniel then reached first after being hit by a pitch, setting up Scherley's heroics.

"It was nice to win one of those one-run games," Seneca East coach Frank Lamoreaux said. "We've lost three of them so far, so it was niece to win one of them."

The game was tied, 4-4, when Hopewell-Loudon took the lead with a run in the top of the seventh. But Seneca East countered with a run in the bottom of the inning and then the game-winner in the ninth.

Mike Burkholder pitched the final inning to notch the win for the Tigers (3-9, 1-2). Justin Butler worked the first eight innings, striking out three and walking two. The two gave up a combined seven hits.

Seneca East banged out 11 hits, 10 of them singles. Burkholder, Andy Bischoff and Dustin Alt had two apiece, while Joe Weaver, Paul Weaver, Butler (double), Jerod Daniel and Scherley chipped in one each.

Joe Kovach doubled for Hopewell-Loudon, and J.R. Brickner, Danny Ray, Brandon Egbert (two), Matt Lang and Shawn Borer added singles.

Egbert took the loss in relief of Ray, who went the first seven innings.
