Harber stands out as H-L tops Fostoria
BASCOM &emdash; Neil Harber tripled, scored a run and drove in a run at the plate and held Fostoria hitters at bay on the mound as Hopewell-Loudon beat the Redmen, 3-2.
"It was a well-pitched game, but all their errors led to our runs," Hopewell-Loudon coach Craig Lang said. "Every time they had an error, we capitalized on it, and that's what other teams had been doing to us. Fostoria had the tying run on in the seventh, but Harber asked me to let him pitch to one more guy, and he got him to pop it up."
The Chieftains improve to 3-8 while Fostoria slips to 6-9. Harber (1-3) got eight strikeouts and five walks, and Ryan Headley took the loss in 4 2/3 innings.
Harber's triple was one of only two hits for the winners. Brandon Deck singled. Nathan Brickner and Brett Taylor scored runs for the Chieftains, who host Mohawk today.
Headley doubled twice and drove in a run for Fostoria, which is at Sandusky today. Tony Holman and Dane Bringman singled, Josh Dawson scored a run and Michael Tucker had an RBI.
Late innings Mohawk's downfall
VAN BUREN &emdash; Van Buren broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the third, and poured on 11 runs in the final three innings of a 14-3 win over Mohawk.
The Black Knights (3-8-1) ended the game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. T.J. Marcotte fell to 1-2 with the loss for Mohawk (6-9), pitching 3 2/3 innings. Kraig Lease (one strikeout), Zack Ekleberry (one strikeout) and Brandt Weininger also pitched for the Warriors.
Nate Lofay had a double as one of his three hits and scored two runs for Mohawk, and Mark Gaietto doubled with a run and an RBI. Chad Sowers contributed an RBI single. Ekleberry, Zack Hufford, Grant Good, Lease and Weininger singled.
Mohawk travels to Hopewell-Loudon today.
Cardinals big on offense in win over SW
FOSTORIA &emdash; Cardinal Stritch was late in arriving to Lucadello Field in Fostoria for Tuesday's game with St. Wendelin. The tardiness must have been due to the bus carrying the Cardinals' heavy offense.
The Cardinals took advantage of wind-blown hits and lots of St. Wendelin errors to pound the Mohawks 19-3.
Cardinal Stritch grabbed a 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning, scored three more in the second on the strength of Nate Hall's two-run homer to pull ahead 7-2, then exploded for seven runs in the third to put the game out of reach.
Kacy Christian smacked two doubles and two singles as part of Cardinal Stritch's 17-hit attack.
Justin Thomas added a two-run home run, a double and a single to eventually drive in three runs.
Corey McClosky had three singles and an RBI, Matt Jaksetic's two singles drove in two runs, Todd Blair and winning pitcher Adam Davenport each chipped in a single and RBI and Jeff Decker and Tom Giovanovi both singled.
Nick Fondessy doubled to lead St. Wendelin while Shannon Dixie and Gabriel Zeyen each lined two singles to drive in a run.
Jeremy Feasel added an RBI and single.
Ryan Smith suffered the loss.
