Softball games

Last minute rally makes Old Fort 8-3

PEMBERVILLE &emdash; Old Fort trailed Eastwood 5-2 with one out and no one on base in the top of the seventh inning, but the Stockaders would put a string of hits together and come back to beat the Eagles, 7-5.

"The first four innings, we looked like we didn't know what a softball was," Old Fort coach Ron Rau said. "We looked like we were asleep. But we woke up and started doing things the right way, and thankfully we did enough right to win the game."

Jenny Seigley stood out for the Stockaders (8-3), improving to 1-1 on the mound. She struck out two and walked two in a compete game win, and helped her own cause at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs.

Seigley would come through with the biggest hit of the seventh inning. Her bases-loaded single drove in two runs to give Old Fort the lead for good.

Heather Webb doubled and singled, scoring two runs and contributing a seventh-inning RBI. Rosy Ortiz had two hits and a run, and Cassandra Frankart had an RBI single. Erin Rau, Manda Jess and Jenice Egbert scored runs.

Eastwood falls to 8-4.

Old Fort has a key MAL game today at Seneca East.

Chieftains scalp L-B

BENTON RIDGE &emdash; Liberty-Benton drew even with Hopewell-Loudon in hitting as each team had six hits, but H-L found many ways to produce runs in a 13-4 whalloping of the Eagles.

The Chieftains (6-7) scored 12 runs in the first four innings, including six in the second inning. Hopewell-Loudon took advantage of 11 walks issued by L-B pitching.

"We jumped on them early, which was good to see, but we still aren't hitting the ball all that well," Hopewell-Loudon coach Steve Adelsperger said. "We got a good start and maintained that lead the whole game."

Lindsay Borer tripled, scored two runs and drove in two runs for the winners, who host Mohawk today, and Elizabeth Hoover had a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Jamie Painter had two runs and an RBI to go with her single, Holly Thom singled and scored, Ashley Frankart had a hit, a run and an RBI and Erin Brenaman added a hit and a run.

Michelle DeVault had two runs and an RBI for Hopewell-Loudon, and Beth Cook had one run and an RBI. Melissa Garcia and Kerstin Reinhart also crossed the plate.

Frankart was the winning pitcher, improving to 4-1 by striking out three and walking two in a complete game.

Ward helps Carey past Hornets

CAREY &emdash; Kara Ward was 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and a triple, and four other Carey hitters had two hits apiece as the Blue Devils routed Cory-Rawson, 14-4.

Carey (3-8) scored four runs in the first inning and five in the second on the way to victory. Jill Kin had a double and a single, three runs scored and four RBIs for the Blue Devils. Molly Zender had a run, two singles and two RBIs, Jackie Zender scored three runs with two hits, and Erin Roark added two runs and two hits.

Connie Cole hit an RBI single and came around to score a run, Kelly Risner had a hit and a run, and Katrina Putnam had an RBI.

Lindsay Caudill (2-5) picked up the pitching win, striking out six and not walking a batter. Carey is at Arcadia Thursday.

Gervais shuts down Seneca East

NORTH ROBINSON &emdash; Colonel Crawford scored three runs in the first inning, and that would be more than enough to help out pitching Leslie Gervais as the Eagles beat Seneca East, 6-0.

Gervais struck out 11 and walked just one in a four-hitter as Colonel Crawford improved to 9-6. Seneca East fell to 7-3. Joleen Williams (1-2) took the loss, fanning three and walking two. Only one of the CC runs was earned.

"Gervais pitched a nice game, and they played great defense behind her," Seneca East coach Rick Bumb said. "We played a little sloppy in the first inning, and they put three runs on the board. We played all right after that."

Laurie Kochel, Charissa Thompson, Kristy Rucker and Haleigh Conley cracked singles off Gervais for the Tigers, who entertain Old Fort in an MAL game today.

Cardinals fly to 9-1

FOSTORIA &emdash; Cardinal Stritch put up four runs in the seventh inning to put and exclamation point on a 7-2 win over St. Wendelin and improve to 9-1 while dumping the Mohawks to 8-7.

"(Stritch) did hit the ball real well, but four of those eight hits came in the seventh," St. Wendelin coach Theresa Webb said. "I think the girls are ready to come back after the layoff we had."

St. Wendelin, which hosts New Riegel today, was limited to two hits. Kendra Reinhard doubled and drove in two runs, and Melanie Saunders had a single. St. Wendelin's runs were scored by Kristy Shumaker and Stacie Radcliff.

Lisa Cool fell to 1-2 with the pitching loss, striking out two and walking three.

Early lead doesn't stand up for NR

NEW RIEGEL &emdash; New Riegel scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead on Elmwood, but the Royals would have a handle on the rest of the game in a 16-1 win over NR.

The Blue Jackets (4-7) were held to three hits. Leanne Wertz had two singles and Erin Mack added one. Mack scored the New Riegel run, and Wertz drove her in.

Mack was the losing pitcher, striking out three and walking two in four innings of work. Pitching two innings for the Blue Jackets was Dawn Kirian, who also struck out two and walked two.

Elmwood (10-2) stole 10 bases and scored six runs in the second inning.

New Riegel goes to St. Wendelin today in an MAL game.
