Baseball games

Early lead doesn't hold up for Tornadoes

Columbian scored the first five runs of the game and outhit Shelby, 11-6, but the Whippets scored four runs each in the fourth and fifth innings and beat TC, 10-7.

Dan Breyman took the pitching loss in three innings of relief work for Columbian (4-9, 3-5 NOL), falling to 1-2. Breyman struck out three and walked three, and starter Mike Everhart struck out one and walked six in four innings.

Shelby hit two triples and two doubles. Kyle Albert had one of the triples and finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.

"The bottom line is, we gave them 11 baserunners," Columbian coach Adam Schmucker said. "You can't do that and expect to win. That's going to hurt any team, and they took advantage of what we gave them very well."

Four Columbian players had two singles apiece. Anthony Theis scored a run and drove in three with his hits, Scott Bloomfield had two base hits and two RBIs, Ryan Clouse had two hits and Jamie Moore (RBI) did the same.

Brad Snyder singled and scored a pair of runs, Dan Lutz singled and Everhart had a run with his single. Nick Shoemaker scored two runs and Mike Porter came across the plate once.

Columbian is back in NOL action tonight, entertaining Norwalk.

Weaver's arm, Leber's hit help SE nip Crestline

ATTICA &emdash; Kurt Weaver kept Crestline at bay with a two-hitter, and Nate Leber's two-run single in the sixth inning gave Seneca East a 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs.

Ryan and Rusty Wagner were on first and third base with two outs in the bottom of the sixth for Seneca East (11-0). After fouling off several pitches, Leber hit a single that scored both runners. Weaver threw a complete game against Crestline (10-5), striking out two and walking two in improving to 4-0.

"Weaver and (catcher) Brian Bischoff both did a great job today," Seneca Each coach Frank Lamoreaux said. "Leber really stuck in there, and it was a heck of an at-bat in a great high school baseball game. Both teams played outstanding, neither team had an error, and this caliber of game is going to do a lot to help us get ready for the tournament."

Leber had two hits for SE, and Nate Dentinger and Leif Fortney also came up with hits. Fortney's hit was a double, and the rest were singles.

Mansfield St. Pete comes to Seneca East today.

Redskins escape with 4-3 win over Carey

CAREY &emdash; Arcadia scored two runs in the seventh inning to overtake Carey and grab a 4-3 win.

The Redskins improved to 10-2, while Carey fell to 2-11.

"With no outs in the seventh, our guy and their runner got tangled at second base, and the umpire called interference on our guy," coach Dennis Ruhe said. "Their runner went to third, and the next guy hit him in. They just worked the other guy around then."

Eric Vaughan started for the Blue Devils and went six innings. Shane Thompson relieved him in the seventh and took the loss. Thompson's tough luck continues as his record dropped to 0-7.

Gavin and Monte Miller each had two hits and scored a run for Carey. Gavin Miller (two RBIs) and David Bratton rapped doubles. Byron Hart scored a run and Thompson had an RBI.

"We played hard and gave a good team fits," Ruhe said. "The close score is a good testament to the kids' effort."

The Blue Devils take on another Blanchard Valley Conference team today when they travel to McComb.

Mohawks can't slam door on Rangers in 12-11 loss

NORTHWOOD &emdash; St. Wendelin had its chance to slam the door on Northwood Thursday, but the Rangers rallied back to clip the Mohawks 12-11 on the strength of four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

"We left the door open there. We jumped out and had a nine-run lead and thought we would finish it in five (innings)," St. Wendelin coach Paul Feasel said. "We just couldn't slam the door when we had to."

That chance to slam the door came after the Mohawks (6-9) scored six in the second and three in the third for a 9-0 lead.

Then the Rangers rallied.

Northwood plated three in the bottom of the third, got three more in the fifth and matched St. Wendelin's two runs in the top of the sixth with two of its own in the bottom to trail 11-8.

After holding St. Wendelin scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Rangers pushed across four runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.

"You keep giving teams the opportunity and they're going to find a way to get back in it and they did," Feasel said.
