Horn highlights district meet for Rams

BUCYRUS -- Upper Sandusky's Meghan Horn set a school record in the discus and also won the shot put, leading the Rams to six event wins in the Division II district at Bucyrus.

The Rams placed fifth of 19 teams, scoring 72. Upper finished behind Ottawa-Glandorf (95), Milan Edison (83), Shelby (77) and St. Mary's Memorial (75). Fostoria's girls did not score.

Horn's record throw in the discus was 131-11, and she won the shot with a toss of 42-8. She will get the chance to compete in the Lexington regional in both events. Two Rams became regional qualifiers in the 1600 as Lyndsey DeWitt won in 5:17.5 and Angie Beeler finished fourth in 5:29.4.

Beeler and DeWitt teamed with Amy Oehlers and Danielle Gottfried on the district 4 x 800 champions, finishing in 9:38.45, and Oehlers and Gottfried were with Kehly Amesquita and Jessica Brodman on the first-place 4 x 200 team, which ran in 1:47.53. Upper's other champion and regional qualifier came from Oehlers in the 3200, which she ran in 11:32.50.

The 4 x 400 team of Gottfried, Beeler, DeWitt and Brodman just missed making the regional, placing fifth, and Brodman was sixth in the 200.

The 4 x 800 relay team and Kent Collins in the 800 made it out of districts for Upper's boys, who finished 10th of 20 teams with 25 points. Fostoria scored nine points to place 16th, but did not advance anyone. Van Wert outdistanced Lima Shawnee for the district title, 83-80 1/2.

Collins was second in the 800 with a time of 1:58.84, and ran the anchor leg on the 4 x 800 squad, which crossed the line in 8:06.28 to place third. Aaron Lambert, Adam Wines and Mark Herring are also headed to Lexington as a member of that team.

The Rams had two near misses, as Paul Lehman was fifth in the discus and Aaron Lambert was fifth in the 3200. Lambert ran a 10:09.61 while the fourth-place runner from Shelby ran 10:09.41. Lehman threw 141-3, less than a foot short of the fourth-place finisher from Ontario. Mark Herring was seventh in the 800.

For Fostoria, the 4 x 100 team placed fifth in 45.1 and Patrick O' Neal finished seventh in both the 100 (11.67) and the 200 (23.32). Lee Vitte placed eighth in the pole vault with a leap of 12-6.
