'Berg stays alive
COLUMBUS -- The Heidelberg men's soccer team played the biggest game of its 2000 season Tuesday.
The 'Berg went to Columbus in a do-or-die situation. If they lost to Otterbein, their season was over. It took double overtime, but Heidelberg pulled out a 3-2 win for the right to play Mount Union on Saturday.
"It was a big game for us," 'Berg coach Brian Haley said. ""We had to win the game. We couldn't afford a tie. We couldn't afford to lose."
The win gives Heidelberg a 4-2-2 record in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Otterbein ends 5-3. Both teams finish tied in points, but the head-to-head win gives The 'Berg the edge.
The game-winning goal came after Heidelberg played part of regulation and the entire first overtime period with just 10 men.
One of The 'Berg's players was taken out of the game after getting a penalty for handling the ball. The resulting free kick by Otterbein's Bobby Weinberger tied the score at 2-2 and forced the overtime.
The deciding shot came off the foot of Paul Cheser. He took the ball at midfield and unloaded a shot from 30 yards out which found the top corner of the net.
"That was the golden goal," Haley said. "Playing a team like Otterbein with 10 men for as long as we did was a testimony to our team's determination and will to win."
Josh London scored both of Heidelberg's goals in regulation. The first started the scoring 21 minutes into the game on a Tony Patrizi assist and a London header.
After Weinberger scored a header of his own in the second half to tie the game 1-1, London gave The 'Berg a 2-1 lead on a free kick.
A win against Mount Union Saturday would give Heidelberg its seventh appearance since 1992 in the OAC final four.
Dragons torch Dominican
Nine players got into the scoring act for the Tiffin women's soccer team, including four with multiple goal games, as the Dragons put a 14-0 pounding on a young Ohio Dominican team.
"They're a first year program and were preparing for tournament, so we didn't let up at all," TU coach James Walker said. "We really unloaded on a team that's young with little experience. I'm sure they're going to be good, but they caught us on a bad day."
Tiffin upped its season mark to 14-1 and 10-0 in the AMC.
Sarah Fieler led the offensive onslaught with three goals. Elizabeth Wead, Nicole Jordan and Maria Bramer each scored twice. Anna Anderson, Carola Anderson, Jamie Long, Martha Fremtsls and Ashley Fritz added a goal apiece.
Carola Anderson and Fieler each tallied three assists. Wead and Kelly Frankford assisted on two goals apiece. Bramer, Long, Fritz and Beth Kostrab each had one.
Not only was the Tiffin offense rolling, but the defense proved stingy as well. Three goalies played for the Dragons and none had to make a save in the shutout performance.
Amanda Hutto was in goal for the first 45 minutes. Rachel Kiehl spelled her for 35 and Jessica Zwayer played the remaining 10 minutes.
TU takes on Notre Dame College Thursday for its final conference game.
TU men roll
Tiffin University took a 3-0 lead after one half and poured it on in the second half, racking up six goals to blow past Shawnee State 9-0.
The Dragons are 12-3-3 overall and 6-2-2 in the AMC. Shawnee State falls to 2-13 and 0-10.
Ali Lukungu led the TU attack with two goals and three assists. Josh Brians also netted a pair of goals and added an assist. Also booting in goals were Todd Van Culin, Travis Litras, Vince Nicolosi, Chris Chase and Tim Palmer. Kiel Menick added two assists as did Van Culin. Brians and Frank Longley contributed assists.
Rob Piekarczyk, Christian Clemensson and Todd Gerbino were all in goal for the Dragons, with each playing one-third of the game.
"It was a good day," Dragon coach Ian Day said. "Everyone got to play and got involved in keeping the offense going.
"Shawnee State was a young team. They have 16 freshmen so we had the edge in experience."
