Heidelberg women stay unbeaten
COLLEGEVILLE, Penn. -- Ursinus jumped out to an early lead and led the Heidelberg women's basketball team for much of the game. But, The 'Berg weathered the storm and improved to 4-0 on the young season with a 64-60 triumph.
The game began with Ursinus hitting its first three shots, all 3-pointers. Before the Heidelberg players could blink, they were down 11-2.
"They got some confidence with those threes," 'Berg head coach Karen McConnell said. "And, we weren't hitting our easy shots."
By halftime, the home team seemed in control as they posted a 37-29 lead at the intermission.
But, The 'Berg didn't give up.
"We used some full court and three-quarters court pressure in the second half, forced some turnovers and that got us the lead," McConnell said. "They played harder than us in the first half. This was our third game in three days, so the legs seemed a little tired."
The score was tied at 58 with 3:19 remaining in the game. Nicole Camper hit a basket and added a free throw, then Amy Ellison made three free throws to give Heidelberg a 64-58 lead.
Ursinus made a last ditch effort with a score at the buzzer to end the game.
Rachel Poland led Heidelberg with 19 points and Ellison added 10.
Ursinus had three in double figures in scoring. Kate Giusto led with 15 points. Bridget Hussey and Jackie Cooper scored 11 apiece.
Dragons upend Davis & Elkins
ASHLAND -- Free throws were the big difference as the Tiffin University Dragons downed Davis & Elkins College, 82-69, in the consolation game of the FirstMerit Classic on Sunday.
The Dragons (2-3) drained 36 of 49 from the free throw line, including 22 of 27 in the second half.
Kyra Waltz recorded a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) to lead TU. Laura Goins knocked down a pair of 3-pointers as she also scored 18. Jacki Swaisgood (11 points) and Jill Holland (10) also cracked double figures.
Despite committing 38 turnovers themselves, the Dragons countered with a defense that forced 34 Davis & Elkins turnovers and held them to 34 percent (26-77) shooting.
Gail Rasor and Alexis Kinkaid each had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Davis & Elkins (2-2). Morgan Johnson, Whitney Grove and Mary Walters added 10 points apiece.
