Carey opens with OT win
VAN LUE -- The season opener proved to be a thriller for the Carey girls basketball team.
The Blue Devils overcame a seven point deficit in overtime and walked away with a 58-57 win over Van Lue.
The game was sent into the extra period on a last second prayer by Van Lue. With eight seconds left, Carey's Pien Chairit made a free throw to give the Devils a three point lead. But, Van Lue broke the press and Trish Umin drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer from the deep wing to force overtime.
Van Lue built a seven point lead with 1:48 left in overtime and seemed to have the game put away. Carey fought back eventually pulling to within one on a Kristin Buhl basket off a Chairit pass on a pick and roll.
The game winner came when Holly Brodman grabbed a rebound, drove the length of the court and found Tricia Putnam on a backdoor cut for a layup.
Brodman scored 17 on the night to lead the Blue Devils. Tricia Putnam had 13 and Buhl added 10, including 3 of 4 from the foul line in overtime.
Buhl grabbed 11 rebounds, Chairit dished out eight assists and Brodman had four steals for Carey.
The Devils host Bettsville Thursday.
