Calvert edges H-L

BASCOM - Calvert's Joel Borer picked up a pin in the heavyweight class to push the Senecas past Hopewell-Loudon in a season-opening dual for both teams, 42-38.

"Unfortunately, we didn't match up well with them," said Calvert coach Matt Coleman, who picked up a win in his first dual as a varsity coach. "Our mistakes are good mistakes. As long as we improve throughout the year we'll be alright. It was nice to be able to win a dual."

Borer pinned Brandon Ruhlen in 35 seconds, but Hopewell-Loudon won three of the four matches that were wrestled. Josh Schalk pinned Calvert's Ben Wolfe in 52 seconds at 119, H-L's Dan Gerritsen won by technical fall over Kevin Hunt at 140 by a score of 22-6, and Scott Gerritsen (171) decisioned Calvert's Chris Mathias, 5-1.

Six Calvert wrestlers won by forfeit in Keith Swartz (103), John Sherman (130), John Arbogast (152), Joe Wade (160), Keven Rinaman (189) and Dustin White (215). Winning by forfeit for the Chieftains were Zach Schalk (112), Mike Steinmetz (125), Chay Chapman (135) and Alex Colatruglio (145).

The Senecas are back on the mats tonight at Carey for a tri which will also include North Baltimore. Hopewell-Loudon will be at the Gibsonburg Invitational Friday and Saturday.
