Owner of wolf-dog previously convicted of attacks on animals

The owner of a dog that is part wolf had been convicted in three cases involving attacks on other animals.

Jerrold Solomon was convicted in 1994, 1996 and 1997 Tiffin Municipal Court cases involving the same dog, which allegedly injured his newborn baby Friday.

In none of those cases was the dog accused of attacking a human being.

The baby was released from St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center Tuesday, Sheriff H. Weldin Neff said.

The 1997 case was the most severe, a fourth-degree misdemeanor dog-at-large charge, in which Solomon pleaded no contest. Solomon was fined $100 and paid $94.50 in court costs.

His dog allegedly attacked a dog Dec. 12, 1997, in front of Solomon's former home in the first block of Warren Street. The other dog was owned by Tiffin resident Patrick Brady.

Brady said he was walking his 12-year-old golden retriever when Solomon's dog attacked it. Brady said Solomon's dog broke the chain and shook and pulled the golden retriever down the street.

The golden retriever weighed about 100 pounds, he said.

Brady said he used what was left of the leash to beat Solomon's dog in the head so it would let go of the golden retriever.

Brady said his dog spent three days in the animal hospital as a result of the attack, but Solomon did pay for the animal's care.

Brady said Solomon's dog never attempted to attack him.

In that case, Solomon was originally charged with having a vicious dog, a first-degree misdemeanor. Tiffin City Prosecutor Randy Hoffman said that charge had to be reduced because for that offense to be charged, it had to be shown that the dog had killed or impaired a human being or had killed another dog.

''For that reason, I didn't have enough to prove that dog was a vicious dog in that case,'' Hoffman said.

In the 1994 case, Solomon's dog allegedly killed another dog and a chicken in the 200 block of Eighth Avenue. Hoffman said no one actually saw Solomon's dog kill the other animals. In the 1996 case, the dog was accused of killing some chickens at a 4000-block North SR 101 home.

Solomon paid a waiver in both cases, which were minor misdemeanor citations.
