![]() January 22, 1999 Sewer work could resume on Monday By David Crawford Sewer construction is to resuming soon on SR 100. Thursday afternoon, City Engineer Curtis Eagle received a sewer construction permit from the Ohio Department of Transportation. It allows the resumption of construction of a sewer line along the highway. The city contractor, Yard Masters, has been at the construction site this week doing what Eagle termed ''clean-up work,'' such as moving gas mains and closing previously used trenches. Eagle said the sewer construction could resume as soon as Monday. He estimates that the project is 70 percent complete. Work stopped on the project when the city's original permit expired. In order to receive a renewal, ODOT required that new safety and road measures be taken at the construction site. On Monday, the Tiffin City Council approved an agreement between the city and Yard Masters determining which party would be responsible for each of the new ODOT-mandated safety and road improvement measures. The city has purchased 150 feet of movable concrete barriers in order to satisfy one of ODOT's safety concerns. Eagle said ODOT has not required traffic signals to restrict traffic through the construction zone. Eagle said ODOT could do this at any time, if it felt it was warranted. If ODOT does, the city would only pay half of the cost difference between traffic signals and the present cost of flag person to control the traffic through the work site. Tiffin was required to purchase a bond to cover any road repairs that would be necessary as a result of the project. As part of the agreement, Yard Masters is responsible for repairing road shoulders to eliminate safety hazards. It also has promised to limit the width of the trenches for sewer construction. |
