![]() January 28, 1999 Recyclables in Tiffin overwhelm hauler By David Crawford American Disposal Services was surprised by the number of bags of recyclables Tiffin residents left at their curbs through Wednesday. Assistant Manager Ed Romatowski of ADS in Carey said, ''The increased participation by the city of Tiffin has already filled two trucks with recycled materials, and expects to fill another by the end of Wednesday.'' Tiffin residents who put out at least one bag of recyclables this week are receiving a free package of 10 recycling bags from ADS. The company is providing the bags as a form of repayment for dumping at least eight tons of recyclables from the city in a landfill late last year. With so many bags of recyclables to collect, ADS crews worked until 8 p.m. Monday to collect most recycling bags on the normal Monday route. Crews returned to Tiffin Tuesday to finish the portion of the route they did not complete Monday. Romatowski said because Wednesday was usually a lighter recycling route, he expected ADS crews would be able to complete all of the day's pickups. But recycling bags still were at the curb Wednesday night on some streets in that portion of the city. Since ADS did not anticipate the high number of homes recycling, Romatowski was concerned the company would not have enough bags to leave on Friday at homes that recycle. ''If and when we would run out of bags, the company planned to write down the remaining addresses and get bags to those homes once we receive more bags. We will make up for the homes we miss.'' |
