Development to spring up in Carey

CAREY -- Sometime over the next year and a half, a development to be called Spring Meadows is to begin to bloom in a field near Carey.

Spring Meadows is to be developed on land in the southwest section of Carey, near US 23. The land is owned by former Carey residents John and David Heck.

The 127-acre development is to include stores and a restaurant, 14 acres for single-family dwellings, 12 acres for multi-family unit apartments, 12 acres for multi-family unit condominiums, eight acres for park land, four acres for assisted living and four acres for senior housing.

The project began more than a year ago when a new water line was discussed.

''We had a water line loop we wanted to install and we had started talking about it with the property owners because of a loan that would help pay for it,'' said Roy Johnson, Carey administrator. ''The owners brought together Coldwell Bankers and said they were thinking of developing it and they brought it to us.''

Johnson said he is excited about the upcoming development.

''I'm glad to see it. It's good to have some controlled growth,'' he said. ''It's been nothing but a farm field for years and now it will be some assisted living, some businesses and some apartments,'' he said.

The project could begin in the next seven months to 1 1/2 years. The development is expected to be completed within five years.

Johnson said he believes the development will meet a need in the community.

''The reason it came about was because of a request by community members. They were looking for empty-nesters. People wanted condos with less maintenance and there is limited single-family housing now. Others wanted a nice apartment complex that wasn't government subsidized,'' he said. ''We've been very fortunate that we had people come to us and work with the community.''
