City Council rezoned a piece of recently annexed property Tuesday night, clearing the way for the relocation of an area business.

The council unanimously approved an ordinance zoning about 28.6 acres of land along SR 18 north of the US 224 intersection for commercial use. Tiffin annexed the land from Hopewell Township, where it had been zoned agricultural, in September.

When the owner, Steven Ley, approached the city planning commission about annexation in June 1999, he planned to move his electrical motor-servicing business to the location. However, Ley could not be reached recently for comment. American Armature now is at 980 Morgan Ave.

The new downtown architectural review board also got its start Tuesday, with City Council approving the mayor's appointment of the board's five members. City Engineer Curtis Eagle, Robert Yager, John Huss, Marsha Paull and Karen Factor will begin approving modifications to the exteriors of downtown buildings, although Mayor Bernie Hohman did not have an exact date when the board will start meeting.

The mayor's appointments of James Supance to the Port Authority and Seth E. Gardner to the Seneca County Health Board were also approved.

In other news, City Council:

  • Approved, 7-0, resolutions supporting the continuation of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Quilter and supporting the renovation and development of the Gold Bond building.
  • Introduced an ordinance establishing a sidewalk improvement fund for administration and construction associated with the new sidewalk program. The ordinance would also transfer $80,000 into the fund from the capital improvements fund.
  • Introduced an ordinance creating a new line item in the mayor's budget for the $95,000 Time Warner Cable will pay the city under the terms of the cable franchise agreement.
  • Introduced an ordinance authorizing $75,000 in payments to the Seneca County Humane Society for construction of a new shelter.
  • Had the second reading of ordinances making a transient business license for one full year and amending the permit process for parades and assemblages.
