A former Tiffin University professor is suing the university for being fired.

David Shevin has filed suit in Seneca County Common Pleas Court against Tiffin University. It stems from his firing in February 1999. The suit states the dismissal came after he voiced his opinion about changes in curriculum.

Shevin is asking for $100,000 in compensatory damages and an additional $100,000 in punitive damages, and other relief, according to court documents.

The suit states that no reasons were given for his termination and no investigation took place after.

Shevin was escorted off campus the day he was fired. He was told not to speak to anyone about Tiffin University.

His computer was seized by university officials when he was fired, denying him access to his e-mail, according to court documents. He is also banned from any events taking place on campus.

It is also stated in the suit that university officials engaged in defamatory action against Shevin by intentionally providing defamatory responses to reference checks.

"What we have is a dismissal of a senior faculty member without cause, provocation, due process and regard to constitutional process," Shevin said Tuesday.

Shevin is currently teaching literature and composition at the University of Findlay.
