Tiffin council picks Grandillo as its president

Fourth Ward Councilman Mike Grandillo has been selected to replace Keith Kirchner as council president when Kirchner's resignation becomes effective July 1.

The City Council approved a resolution naming Grandillo president pro tempore, 7-0, Monday night.

"I'm thankful and honored that that my fellow councilmen selected me," Grandillo said. "I hope I live up to their expectations."

The council president presides over meetings of City Council, casts tie-breaking votes and assumes the duties of the mayor if the mayor cannot fulfill them.

The council also approved, 7-0, a resolution thanking Kirchner for more than a quarter-century total service, first representing the 2nd Ward, then holding an at-large seat and finally as council president.

"You're making this another tough night," said Kirchner, who announced his resignation at the June 5 council meeting.

"All the people of the city of Tiffin realize what effort you have put into public service for the city," Mayor Bernie Hohman said.

"It's somewhat bittersweet," Grandillo said of his appointment. "One, that Keith's leaving, and the people of the 4th Ward are very important to me."

In addition to appointing a new president pro tempore after Grandillo is sworn in as president, the council has until July 31 to appoint a new 4th Ward councilman, Law Director Brent Howard said.
