Bar works fine as wedding chapel

NEW ULM -- Curt Cumberland and Shirley Wilds say the out-of-the-ordinary is no stranger to them.

It should be no surprise, then, that the couple decided to be married in a less than traditional place.

Cumberland and Wilds tied the knot Saturday morning at the bar they just opened, the Hideout Pub & Grub, 301 N. Minnesota St.

"We always do things a little different, I guess," Cumberland said. "We had been talking about it for a while and we finally said 'let's just do it.'"

That was just before Christmas in 1999, but both of the newlyweds say it really wasn't a quick decision, as both were married once previously and between them they have six kids already.

"It was much more thought out this time," Cumberland said. "With much more meaning."

Cumberland and Wilds are currently leasing the bar, which opened New Year's Eve, but have hope of owning it one day.

Since they worked so hard to get the place ready to open, it was only natural for the marriage to occur there, said Cumberland, who's been in New Ulm for about a year and a half.

"As much time as we put into this it, this place is kind of like our home," he said. "I'm just glad to get together with people I haven't seen for a while and meet new people. The Polish and people and the German people -- they fit right in.

"It's a nice relaxing afternoon, which is kind of what we wanted."

To help with the atmosphere, musician Stan Carda performed throughout the day. There was no big reception dinner, but everyone was welcome to food and cake provided by Cumberland's mom.

Cumberland said about 100 people were frequenting the establishment at any one time.

All in all, it was a good day for a wedding.

However, not everything went smoothly.

Last week, as Cumberland was reading through different wedding scripts, he came to the part about exchanging the rings.

"I realized I forgot to pick up the rings," he said.

It all worked out, though, the rings became available at the last moment and the rest is history.

"New Ulm has been good to us so far," Cumberland said. "The people here are very nice."
