Community theater enthusiasts organize to form NUACT

NEW ULM -- There's a new act in town. It's New Ulm Actor's Community Theater.

The organization grew out of a desire by local thespians to bring back community theater. The drive for forming NUACT came from a meeting held last September.

"We all agreed that there is indeed a future for theater," said Judy Sellner, chair of the NUACT board. "However, more than that, we felt that there was a need for theater."

A town meeting on the future of theater in New Ulm followed on Oct. 28.

"It was well attended, and all attendees filled out a questionnaire, and from those responses, it was decided to forge ahead. A board of directors was organized in November, and we have been meeting every other week," Sellner said.

Other board members are Isla Hoffman, Allie Fleischmann, Sherri and Craig Golden, Bobbi McCrea, Mark Wood and Mike Stark.

The organization's first goal, Sellner noted, is a "hopefully knock 'em dead" production in September. The performance is planned for the first two weekends at the new Arts and Activities Center.

"It will be a musical comedy or a comedy yet to be be determined. We have read five scripts and will be making a decision within the next couple weeks. At this time, we haven't determined how many productions we will do each year," she said.

NUACT's auditions will be open to anyone. She emphasized that people do not have to be members to audition or to help.

"We have an enthusiastic board determined to offer the New Ulm area the excitement of theater," she said.
