NEW ULM -- Cathedral High School junior Tony Moldan earned a trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for the third straight year after competing in a regional fair Saturday in Mankato.

Another student, 9th grader Tim Guldan, was named an alternate to the fair, and will be attending, said Luker

Moldan's project "Does fat content emulate a more significant role in false positives than the somatic cell?" propelled him to the international event May 6-12 in San Jose, Calif.

How did he do it?

"Work, work, work," Cathedral High School science teacher Judy Luker said. "He started working in this field with his sixth grade project and continued in the same area since then. It takes a lot of effort and time for these kids to get to know their projects inside and out.

Luker said she was thrilled with her student's efforts.

"I was on a high yesterday," Luker said. "All three of my high school students entered earned state fair trips. We will have 19 students in the state fair. All the kids did an outstanding job. They represented the school very well."

The international fair will feature over 1,000 contestants from 42 countries, according to Luker.

Moldan will be able to meet with the world's top scientists at the international fair.

Guldan's project was "Does the presence of compost in soil change the effectiveness of corn gluten on the germination of Timothy grass?"

Luker said Guldan's project is an advanced version of ones he did in seventh and eighth grade.
