NEW ULM -- The Beussman Bridge closed Wednesday evening as the swollen Minnesota River continued a steady rise beyond its banks.

Commuters to New Ulm now face a longer drive from residences on the Nicollet County side of the River. In 1993 and 1997, floodwaters covered the Beussman Bridge.

Meanwhile, the river watch continues in New Ulm. As of Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service continued to predict a crest of 809.5 feet on Tuesday or Wednesday. In 1997, the Minnesota River crested at 811 feet.

In New Ulm, the city's Emergency Response Committee (ERC) for flood continued monitoring the river and preparing for the water headed downstream.

Local efforts include creating berms (earthen banks) behind homes near the Minnesota River to ensure that city sanitary sewer and water service is not at risk.

"Everything is going pretty well," New Ulm Street Commissioner Tom Patterson said. "We have organized lots of trucks to haul a good clay material from the pit, behind Christ the King Church."

City workers were joined by trucks and drivers from Madelia, St. James and Brown County.

"We are monitoring daily crest predictions and are prepared to take further action if necessary," Patterson said. "Sandbagging is our last resort."

Volunteers have not been requested at this time. A plan is in place if volunteers are needed. Those interested in helping are asked to stay tuned to local media for further updates

Streets closed in the area where crews are working are South Front, from 7th-14th South and side streets between Front and Valley, from 9th-14th South.

Only authorized vehicles will be allowed in barricaded areas. New Ulm Police will patrol affected areas.

Early Wednesday evening, part of State Highway 4 washed out just north of Sleepy Eye. The washout was caused by a culvert failure that undermined the roadway. Traffic will be detoured until repairs are made, according to the Minnesota Department of transportation.

The weather forecast does not offer relief. Occasional rain is predicted for the next several days.
