FRANKLIN -- Thanks to a Fairfax native, the days of a downtown cafe returned here after 18 months without one.

With help from his family of eight brothers and sister and friends, Francis Pfarr, who now lives in Olivia, opened the Franklin Cafe near the west end of Main Street on April 5. The cafe was formerly known as The Burger Basket.

Pfarr has 25 years experience in the restaurant business. He managed a Subway restaurant in Olivia and more recently operated The Other Place restaurant in Hector.

"It's nice to be back in the area," Pfarr said. His sister Cindy operates a bar next door.

The cafe is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and welcomes take out orders. Fresh cinnamon and carmel rolls are available each morning. Coffee and rolls are sold on the honor system.

The most expensive item on the extensive menu is rib eye steak at $7.75. Shrimp, chicken, soups of the day, and deep friend catfish and gizzards and homemade pies and cakes are available.

Pfarr said his first few days of operation were enjoyable as the community supported him well.
