Water, sewer mainsgoing in onN. BroadwayBy FRITZ BUSCH Journal Staff Writer NEW ULM -- Water and sewer main replacement work, on Broadway from Seventh North to Ninth North will take place this week as Stage 1 of the Highway 14 reconstruction project continues. Meanwhile, milling and bituminous removal from 17th to Ninth North streets and concrete pavement, curb and gutter removal from 17th to 14th North will be done. Intersections may be closed at times, as this work takes place. Marv Kruger, Minnesota Department of Transportation chief inspector, is pleased with the progress. "Things are moving along; it's what we like to see," Kruger said. New Ulm Police Sgt. Myron Wieland said he'd like to see a 30 mph sign on Broadway near 20th North to keep traffic closer to the speed limit. Kruger said a sign could be added to that area. For the second straight week, North Garden Street resident Jesse Versch complained about cars backing up for three blocks south of Highway 14, blocking his driveway on Garden Street. Last week, Versch asked Kruger if stoplight timing could be adjusted to prevent traffic from backing up so far between 3-6 p.m. Kruger said his stoplight technician is monitoring the stoplight traffic situation. Robert Haack, who lives near the intersection of Garden Street and Highway 14, said he needs to change the angle (raise) his driveway because the highway would be raised 2 feet. Kruger said the highway would be a little more than a foot higher after reconstruction. City Engineer Steve Koehler urged affected North Broadway businesses to watch for boulevard signs that may have been moved during the night. Motorists were urged to use extra caution on designated haul routes like Minnesota from Seventh North to 2th North, 12th North between Front and Garden; and Garden from 12th and 20th North. Twelfth North will remain open until construction progress makes it necessary to work on it. Every third intersection of the reconstruction zone will remain open when feasible. Weekly public meetings on the project continue at 1 p.m. Mondays in Room B at the Brown County License Bureau, 1900 N. Franklin.
