NEW ULM -- Six-year-old Colten Camacho of New Ulm isn't wasting time showing the world how much compassion he has for humanity.

Last week, the youth that just completed kindergarten at Jefferson Elementary School decided to tour his hilltop neighborhood, asking for donations for the needy.

He talked about how he got the idea.

"I've seen so many police cars stopping to help people, I thought about it and wanted to help," Camacho said. "I told people I was collecting for poor people."

His mother Brenda didn't realize what he was doing until after the fact. She was a little apprehensive at first.

"I thought people might think it was a scam, but I think they realized kids are pretty innocent at that age," Brenda Camacho said. "He told me he thanked everybody that contributed to his cause."

Colten collected nearly $16 and a stuffed animal in his neighborhood. His mother decided to donate the money and stuffed animal to the New Ulm Area Food Shelf.

This summer, Colten plans to set up a lemonade stand and donate proceeds to the New Ulm Humane Society.
