Grads will need faithMore than money and science needed in today's world, Schreiber tells CHSgraduatesBy FRITZ BUSCH Journal Staff Writer NEW ULM -- Perhaps graduating Cathedral High School senior Danny Schreiber said it best in his Commencement Farewell Address Sunday at St. Mary's Church when he told his classmates they'll need more than money and science to get through today's world. Schreiber said the economy is weak, the job outlook is murky and global terrorism is rising, but a special tool will get graduating seniors through it all. "Our faith will lead us through this world," Schreiber said. "Remember the doors are always wide open to Christ. Take care of yourselves because I care about you," he concluded, his voice wavering with emotion. Schreiber thanked New Ulm Area Catholic School faculty and staff for making sacrifices for the good of himself and his fellow students. Commencement speaker Mary Dengerud compared the path of life with learning to ride a bike. "Remember to pedal," she said. Bishop John C. Nienstedt asked that the Lord grant the graduating seniors the wisdom to know Him clearly, share His glory and know the scope of His power to all who believe. "Give of yourselves selflessly for the welfare of others, especially to those that are poor, strangers or outcasts, Nienstedt said. "Use your gifts and stay close to Jesus. That is all you will take with you beyond death and on to eternity." Distinguished Student Awards went to Salutatorian Jacob Hillesheim and Valedictorian Robyn Schnobrich. Travis Janni received the Lumen Christi Award. Distinguished Alumni/Friends awards went to '73 CHS grad Duane Suess, achievement; science teacher Judy Luker and '50 CHS grad The Rev. Leo Dummer. The Class Song "Forever Young" by Bob Dylan was performed by Amber Franta, Mary Hazuka, Molly Martinka, Annie Sweeney and Shelly Waibel.
