NEW ULM -- A variety of concerns were expressed Monday at the weekly Highway 14 reconstruction project meeting at the Brown County License Bureau.

Concerns about traffic speeding and using alleys as detour routes were noted by Minnesota Highway Department Project Engineer Bob Williams.

He reminded the public to use marked detours whenever possible and obey city speed limits at all times, according to the weekly project update distributed by the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce.

Truckers unloading semi-trailers in alleys that are the only street access for businesses on the project route was another concern.

New Ulm Police Chief Erv Weinkauf said truckers have the right to unload their trailers but not in alleys when it is the only road access businesses have.

Williams said contractors worked last Saturday in an effort to make up for time lost due to the recent wet weather.

Grading work continues on North Broadway, between Seventh North and Ninth North streets. Curb and gutter and granular Class 5 base layer will follow before pavement is expected to be laid starting on Monday, June 14.

Water main replacement work is ongoing from 14th North to 17th North streets. Storm sewer will go in this week between 16th North and 17th North streets.

The Highway Department is ordering flashing red lights for the 20th North and Broadway intersection. The lights will replace centerline stops signs at the intersection.

The Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad is installing a new railroad crossing at Brown CSAH 12.
