Towns plan for Fourth of July celebrationsA wide variety of July Fourth weekend events will take place in New Ulm, Sleepy Eye, Cambria and Hanska, and at the Harkin Store. New Ulm The Wendinger Brothers, Moldan Dutchmen Band, Adam's Jammers, the Concord Singers and Smiley Wiltscheck will perform Sunday at Turner Park between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Bingo will be played from 1-3:30 p.m. Food, beverages, carnival games and Turner Hall tours will be available. Sleepy Eye Events kickoff Saturday evening with a Hog Roast at 6 p.m. A street dance at Sleepy Eye Arena featuring Staff 68 will take place from 8 p.m. until midnight. On Sunday, a buffalo burger feed takes place in Allison Park. The fireworks display, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Eagles, begins at 10 p.m. over Sleepy Eye Lake. Cambria Fireworks, sponsored by the Cambria Community Fund and Fourth of July Program Committee, will be presented Saturday. Donations can be made to Winton Jones, 23438 483 Ave., New Ulm, MN 56073. An ecumenical church services begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. A parade starts at 1 p.m. at the west end of town. A patriotic program begins at 2 p.m. in the town hall. Old-time events and a food stand will be in the park including a Program Committee fancy cake auction. Hanska A 16-team co-educational softball tournament with unique Norwegian rules in the hard-luck bracket, begins in the park at 9 a.m. Friday and will continue through Sunday. Fireworks, sponsored by the Hanska Baseball Association and Hanska Fire Department, begin at dusk Friday at the ball park. Food and beverages will be sold at the ball park. Raffle drawings for 45 cash prizes, which are worth more than $2,600, will be held Sunday afternoon in the park. Only 750 tickets will be sold. They will be available at the ball park concession stand until they are sold out. Fireworks donations can be mailed to the Hanska Baseball Association, P.O. Box 179, Hanska, MN 56041 or left at the concession stand throughout the weekend. Harkin Store Members of the New Ulm Battery will take part in an historical marker dedication in the parking lot at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Other afternoon activities include a cannon salute by the New Ulm Battery, patriotic speeches and a sing-along, old-time music and cannon firing demonstrations until 4 p.m. For more information, call the Harkin Store at 354-8666 or the Nicollet County Historical Society 934-2160. The Harkin Store, which is operated by the Nicollet County Historical Society, is located 9 miles northwest of New Ulm on Nicollet County Highway 21. St. Peter Fireworks begin at 10 p.m. Sunday at the Nicollet County Fairgrounds.
