New Ulm fireworks kicks off holiday celebration

NEW ULM -- The Milford Fireworks Fund continues to inch its way toward its $6,500 goal, with its show scheduled for tonight on the outskirts of New Ulm.

As of Friday afternoon, the fund was at $2,109, according to organizer Dale Mack.

Fireworks observers are asked to park in the K-Mart parking lot for the 10 p.m. show.

The annual New Ulm July 4th Concert in Turner Hall Park begins at 11:30 a.m. on July 4 with food and beverages. The Original German Band plays at 12:30 p.m., the Adams Jammers at 1:30 p.m., Wendinger Brothers at 2:30 p.m. and the Cletus Goblirsch Band at 4:45 p.m.

Admission is free. Events will move inside in case of bad weather.

In other area celebrations, Cambria will hold its 130th Fourth of July celebration Wednesday, with a parade at 1 p.m. and a patriotic program at 2 p.m. in the town hall. There will be games in the park for kids, an evening father/son/daughter baseball game, and fireworks at dusk.

St. Peter hosts its 31st Annual Old-Fashioned Fourth of July with an 8K Fun Run starting at 7:15 a.m. in Minnesota Square Park. A 5K Fun Walk starts at 8:30 a.m. and a Toddler Trot at 9:45 a.m. Proceeds go to the United Way.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on Minnesota Avenue (Highway 169). More than 100 units are expected to show from Nassau to Pine Street. Bands include the St. Peter Govenairs, Mankato Lancers, Edmonton Strutters and St. Peter and Le Sueur-Henderson High School bands.

Minnesota Square Park will host MC Express after the parade. The group will play 50s, 60s and 70s tunes plus country music.

Fireworks will be displayed at the Nicollet County Fairgrounds at 10 p.m.

The Hanska Baseball Association hosts a 16-team co-ed softball tournament starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday Games will continue until about 9:30 p.m. Shortly after that, fireworks will be displayed over the ball park.

Softball and a good variety of food will continue Saturday and Sunday, July 7-8. The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, kraut dogs, and German and American potato salad. The big raffle will be drawn at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 8 at the ball park.

The Sleepy Eye Jaycess will host a street dance Tuesday at the Sleepy Eye Arena 8 p.m. to midnight. Wednesday, activities for all ages will be held in Allison Park.

The lineup includes a buffalo burger feed 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., flag raising by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard followed by the Community Band at noon, egg and water balloon tossing at 3:30 p.m., an ice cream social, bingo, and old-time and country music all afternoon. Fireworks begin over the lake at 10 p.m.

Can't wait till the holidays? The Winthrop Volunteer Fire Dept. presents the Shaw Bros. Band 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday in front of the fire hall on Main Street. Gates open at 6 p.m. with happy hour until 7 p.m. Food will also be available.
