Building permits show strengthBy RON LARSEN Journal Staff Writer NEW ULM -- After a slow start, building in New Ulm has taken off like a rocket. At the mid-year point, a record total of 279 permits valued at $11,988,688 has been issued. That's 24 more than were issued through the end of June last year, and 28 more than in 2002. While the total value is more than two times the $5,130,500 value of last year's permits, it trails 2002's sales tax referendum projects-inflated mid-year value of $17,622,043. Subtract the STR projects, and 2004's total tops 2002's by around $5 million. The big push has been in industrial and commercial building. Twenty permits valued at $8,272,088 have been issued to date. That's four more and $6.5 million more than issued in 2003, but it trails 2002 by eight permits and about $7 million in value. However, in the building of additions and in repairs, 2004 is a clear leader over both previous years. The city issued 211 permits for additions and repairs totaling $1,312,600. That's 27 more permits and over $300,000 more value than issued in 2003, and 40 more permits and $325,000 more value than in 2002. In new single-family housing starts, 2004's 11 permits valued at $1,734,000 trails 2003 when 15 permits valued at $2,088,000 were issued. However, it tops 2002 when seven permits totaling $1,019,000 were issued in the first six months. During June, there were only two single-family housing starts, totaling $250,000, but there were four multiple-family housing starts totaling $360,000. There were none in either the first half of 2003 or 2002. June Permits Mary Ann Grundmeyer, 810 8th North St., finish basement room, $2,000.
