Dewanz receives Athena AwardBy MARTHA KRIENKE Journal Staff Writer NEW ULM -- Friends and family of Opal Dewanz stood in anticipation, as they awaited her arrival at the Brown County Historical Society to surprise her with the Athena Award. Dewanz is the eighth woman to receive this award meant to "celebrate women who strive for the highest level of accomplishment." Dewanz is the site manager of the Harkin Store. Humbly, she said, "When I think of all the wonderful ladies who have won this before, I just don't feel like I'm in that category." Her jaw dropped and eyes teared as she was handed the bronze sculpture with a Belguim black marble base, accented with an imported Austrian crystal. When she was finally able to form a sentence, she said, "This is absolutely overwhelming. I don't know what to say." Dewanz's family and friends, including the ladies of the Red Hat Society, took turns congratulating and hugging Dewanz. With a beautiful coral rose bouquet and mylar balloon in hand, Dewanz said, "I've done what I've done 'cause I enjoy it." Dewanz is a member of the New Ulm Red Hat Society called Hermann's Frauleins. The founder Carol Steinhaus said, "Opal always wants to have a good time and is fun to be around." Steinhaus and seven other members came to celebrate with Dewanz. Women chosen for the Athena Award are acknowledged for "excelling in their chosen field and opening paths for others to follow," said Jeanne Albrecht, New Ulm Chamber of Commerce executive. "Athena" means goddess of wisdom. The Chamber of Commerce and Jensen Motors sponsor the award.
