ARLINGTON -- The Sibley County Fair kicked off its first day Friday and will run through Sunday evening in Arlington.

"The weather has been great," said Sibley County Fair board member Judy Schaefer, of Gibbon.

Schaefer said they started entering people for the fair on Wednesday night. A midwest pro-wrestling event was also held on Wednesday evening featuring a showdown between wrestlers "Shifty" and "The Sheriff." The event was organized two weeks prior to the match on Wednesday.

"This area is still considered to be a farming community," said Fair board Member Marge Kloeckl, of Arlington, "You get boys and girls, fathers and mothers and animals working together. The variety of activities draws people to the fair."

On Friday evening Miss Sibley was crowned with Alycia Gruenhagen, of Glencoe taking the reign.

"It's a lot of fun being Miss Sibley," said Gruenhagen, "I appreciate the friendly people in Sibley County. So many people are nice and so sweet here."

Gruenhagen said that it is an honor for her to represent a community with small town values."

The 10th annual free sweet corn feed was held yesterday at 4 p.m. in the refreshment stand. Approximately 600 barrels of sweet corn were served from 4-7 p.m. by Sibley County Fair board members and volunteers. The sweet corn was donated by Agri Links and others volunteered other things for the feed.

"It (the sweet corn feed) started out as an experiment, and now it's turned into a tradition," said Fair board member Dennis VanMoorlehem, of Arlington, "We (25 fair board members) hardly get to see each other during the fair because everyone has different jobs, so this is the one time we get to get together."

Two steam boiler cooked the ears of corn and then the corn was transported to a serving table near the refreshment stand on the fairgrounds.

The sweet corn was served by retired fair board members and this year's Miss Sibley Royalty.

An air show by the Flying Irishman Joe Dooley, of Hutchinson, was held yesterday at the grandstand and he will return to do another show on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. Dooley flies a Pitts S1S biplane for his air shows.

"The show went very well for him on Friday. It's just a perfect site for him to perform," said Cheryl Dooley, who is Dooley's spotter before he arrives in his plane to the fairgrounds.

Dooley, who has done air shows for the past nine years, dazzles audiences with loops, rolls, hammerheads, Lomcevak's (the Russian word for headache), Wifferdills, Cuban Eights, and square loops. Dooley has given shows at EEA convention in Oshkosh, Wis, and also at Sun 'N Fun in Lakeland, Fla. among other places.
