Guggisberg chosen State Trooper of the YearBY SARA SYVERSON Journal Staff Writer NEW ULM -- The Minnesota State Patrol named Sgt. Kevin Guggisberg, of the Mankato District, the 1999 Trooper of the Year at an annual awards ceremony held in Eagan on Wednesday. This honor recognizes Guggisberg for his integrity and his excellence throughout his 15-year career with the State Patrol. "I was surprised," said Guggisberg, "I was honored, but I'm sure there were other troopers who were probably more deserving." Chief of the Minnesota State Patrol, Col. Anne Beers said, "I am proud of the dedication and commitment to excellence demonstrated daily by all men and women who make up the State Patrol. Recognizing just one trooper is difficult, however, Kevin's dedication, commitment and tireless service make this a fitting honor for a trooper who epitomizes the best qualities of the State Patrol organization." Captain Mike Asleson, who is Guggisberg's district commander described, him as a "long distance runner." Guggisberg serves as a background investigator, a field training officer, and an instructor for driving while intoxicated cases. Guggisberg has also served as an Honor Guard member of the State Patrol and the U.S. Air Force at their non-commissioned officers academy. He has served on the State Patrol accident reconstruction advisory board and as a participant in numerous special projects. "Sgt. Kevin Guggisberg epitomizes a State Patrol Trooper," said Cathy M. Clark, communications director for the Office of the Commissioner, "Sgt. Kevin Guggisberg is the State Patrol in the New Ulm area. He is highly respected by all who know him. For his fine work he is awarded the honor of State Trooper of the Year." "He is loyal, dependable, honest, dedicated, hard working and respected by all. He displays exemplary integrity and serves as a role model for other law enforcement officers," Clark said. Guggisberg has received two lifesaving awards as well as a meritorious service award, according to Clark. "He also led the State Patrol's effort to assist following the catastrophic tornado in Comfrey," said Clark. Prior to working on the State Patrol, Guggisberg served Sibley County as Chief Deputy for 10 1/2 years. "I enjoyed the years as a Deputy Sheriff," said Guggisberg, "But sometimes I wish I would have switched to the State Patrol sooner. They both were rewarding jobs. No day was ever the same. ... It's always different." Guggisberg was nominated for the State Trooper of the Year award by Capt. Mike Asleson and Lt. Stan Gruis, and a committee reviewed the nominations.
