NEW ULM -- Brown County commissioners have approved a preliminary property tax levy of $6,661,604 for the proposed 2000 budget, a 2.6 percent increase for county taxpayers compared to the 1999 levy.

The commissioners set this levy amount last week, and then submitted it to the Minnesota Department of Revenue Property Tax Division on Wednesday. The total property tax aid from the state is estimated at $1,454,211, which comes in the form of Homestead Ag Credit Aid (HACA), Criminal Justice Aid, Family Preservation Aid, Local Performance Aid and PERA Aid.

The total revenues in the proposed 2000 budget are $19,259,025, which is $823,438 more than last year.

The total expenditures for the proposed 2000 budget are $19,259,025. Thirty-five percent of this amount will be paid by local property tax. In 1999, taxpayers paid 35 percent of the total amount which was $18,435,587.

Almost two-thirds of the total expenditures in the 2000 budget receive funding by sources other than property taxes, which means the funds are coming from state and federal monies as well as from charges and service fees.

A significant change for the county in 2000 will be an increase in state and federal funds to the Road and Bridge Department.

The amount needed to balance the county's revenues and expenditures in the 2000 budget is $81,415 and must do so by December.

The total mobile home property tax for the proposed 2000 budget, is $21,390, a 42.6 percent increase from the adopted 1999 budget.

A copy of the proposed 2000 county budget is available to the public to review at the county courthouse.

There will be a Truth-in-Taxation hearing at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, at the courtroom. This public hearing seeks input from taxpayers before the budget is finalized.
