NEW ULM -- The "coffee" talk around town lately seems to be about Cornerstone Coffee. The shop opened its doors for business two weeks ago under the ownership of Lori Furth.

Cornerstone Coffee is located at 213 S. Minnesota Street.

"It's been better than I expected," said Furth, "A lot of people say 'I heard about it at bridge club. ...' Lots of people are talking about it, I guess."

The coffee shop serves gourmet and specialty coffees and a variety of sandwiches as well as bagels, rolls and muffins and desserts.

The business is capturing the essence and the vision of what Furth hoped to create.

"Actually it's turned out the way I wanted it to be," said Furth, "People are bringing in their families and meeting for coffee. It's been great. People have been really friendly and interested in the building and the coffee part of it."

Furth said the owners of the building, Charles and Roberta Hintz, of New Ulm, tried to keep the character of the building in tact when they remodeled it into a coffee shop. The building dates back to 1865 and was originally used as a bakery.

"They (the Hintzes) wanted to kind of keep it in the era that it was," said Furth.

Work on the building included new flooring in one section, wainscotting, painting, and new plumbing and electricity.

The original woodworking decorations above the doors, also known as "bullseyes," were preserved in the process, Furth said.

Before opening Cornerstone Coffee, Furth worked in the food service office at Martin Luther College.

"I'm really grateful for the warm welcome I've received in New Ulm for the coffee shop," said Furth.

The hours of Cornerstone Coffee are from 7 a.m to 4 p.m.
