Fest ends on successful note

NEW ULM -- It appears the elders outlasted the youngsters.

The dance floor was filled at Turner Hall Sunday for the last day of Oktoberfest, but it was doubtful none of the dancers were under 50 years old.

A good crowd showed up for "Rocktoberfest," aimed at the younger generation, which included a bonfire Saturday night behind the hall.

However, the youth were nowhere to be seen Sunday.

Regardless, Jeanine McKenna said Sunday's musical diet of the Wendinger Brothers, the Concord Singers and the German Bohemian Heritage Singers, attracted a good number of people.

"It's been great today," she said. "It's been full in here."

The food lines were also full Sunday, as visitors sampled the mainly German menu of German potato salad, apple strudel, landjaeger on a bun and German chocolate cake, and plenty of sauerkraut.

McKenna said the horse trolley rides were also busy Sunday and that the entire Oktoberfest went well the past two weekends.

It snowed one weekend and was beautiful the next, but whatever the weather, it didn't keep people away.

"I think admissions will be up a bit this year," she said.

She pointed to the success of the "Rocktoberfest," new this year, the trolley rides, the food sales and those attending the musical performances, as indicators of a positive festival.

Mckenna was quick to give attention to those that worked for free.

"We couldn't do it without the volunteers," she said.
