NEW ULM -- Carol Melick of New Ulm has become the court administrator for Brown County.

Melick was appointed to the job on Sept. 27 by new Fifth Judicial District Judge John Rodenberg.

Judy Besemer, the previous court administrator, resigned to take a similar position Blue Earth County in August.

Enthusiasm marks Melick's approach to her new job.

"I'm very excited about the position -- to bring my knowledge and experience into the position," said Melick, "I look forward to expanding my knowledge in administration."

Melick began working for Brown County in May of 1979 as a deputy in the traffic division. In 1981, she was promoted to chief deputy in the court administrator's office.

Before working for Brown County, Melick lived in Mankato for four years and worked at the YMCA. She attended the area vocational school in Mankato and graduated in 1975 with a general secretarial degree.

"I very much like the position -- I'm enjoying it," said Melick, "It's a bigger challenge. My main goal is to get the new judge in and settled and getting the court back to some normalcy -- in the court administrator's office and the courtroom activities -- now that we have a new resident judge."

Rodenberg will be sworn in Friday, Oct. 27, at the courthouse. Rodenberg replaced Terri Stoneburner who resigned on April 28, to become a judge of the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

"Judge Rodenberg is going to do an excellent job for Brown County, and I look forward to working with him," said Melick.

Melick gives a lot of credit to her professional advancement to mentoring from Besemer and also from working with the staff in the court administration office.

"I'm good at my job because of my dedication and the hardworking staff that's been in the office," said Melick.

Melick and her husband Scott have two children: Mandy, 22, and Stephanie, 16.
